Associate Professor Buckley is the author of William Clark: Indian Diplomat (Univ. of Oklahoma Press, 2008), co-author of By His Own Hand?: The Mysterious Death of Meriwether Lewis (Univ. of Oklahoma Press, 2006), and co-author/co-editor (w/ Matthew L. Harris) of  Building an "Empire of Liberty": Zebulon Pike, Thomas Jefferson, and the Opening of the West (forthcoming, Univ. of Oklahoma Press, 2010). His next books include A Fur Trade History of the Great Plains and Canadian Prairies (Plains Histories series, Texas Tech Univ. Press) and Historic Orem, Utah (Arcadia Publishing).

Recipient of the Charles Redd Center's Mollie and Karl G. Butler Young Scholar Award in Western Studies, Buckley currently serves on the national Board of Directors of the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation, which provides national leadership on scholarship, education, and conservation pertaining to the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail.  He and his wife, Becky, are the parents of three children.

Biography: Teaching, Scholarship, and Citizenship

Jay H. Buckley (PhD, Nebraska) joined the BYU history faculty in Fall 2001.  He teaches American West and American Indian history courses and directs the Native American Studies minor.  His specialties include Lewis & Clark, exploration & migration, Indian-white relations, fur trade, and other western themes.
