Mark I. Choate joined the BYU History Department faculty in August 2001. He teaches courses on Europe since 1914, Italy since 1848, World Civilizations since 1500, colonialism, international migration, and European fascisms. His first book, "Emigrant Nation: The Making of Italy Abroad," is forthcoming from Harvard University Press, June 2008.

Mark began his undergraduate studies at the University of Oklahoma, and received his B.A. magna cum laude, M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. in history (2002) from Yale University. His dissertation on Italian colonialism and migration, supported by a Fulbright Scholarship, was awarded Yale’s Hans Gatzke Prize for an outstanding dissertation in European history. A paper he presented in August 2001 at the International Conference of Historical Geographers in Quebec was awarded the Andrew Hill Clark Prize by the American Academy of Geographers. Mark has also presented conference papers at meetings of the American Historical Association, Association for the Study of Ethnicity and Nationalism, Association for the Study of Modern Italy, and French Colonial History Society. His articles and reviews have appeared in Forum Italicum, Modern Italy, French Colonial History, The International Journal of African Historical Studies, Journal of Modern Italian Studies, and International Migration Review.
