A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing
Dear students,
The Thetean is a scholarly student-produced journal representing historical essays written by students at Brigham Young University. The Thetean staff is currently seeking submissions for publication in the spring of 2009. We are looking for polished papers dealing with any historical or historiographical topic. Manuscripts will be evaluated according to originality of the thesis, standard of scholarly historical method, and writing style. Do you have a history paper from the past year that you worked especially hard on and that you feel proud of? If it is still unpublished and is at least ten pages in length, please consider submitting it to our journal.
Papers should be submitted to the editor, Drew Mecham, through the History Department office (2130 JFSB) beginning December 2008 through January 16, 2009 . In order to submit your paper, please download, print, and fill out two copies of the cover sheet from the Phi Alpha Theta web page. You will need to submit two copies of your paper, each with a cover sheet stapled to the top. Your contact information will be on the cover sheet, so please make sure your name or identity is not found anywhere in the paper itself. Manuscripts should be double spaced, with page numbers and standard one-inch margins, and the format should follow The Chicago Manual of Style (Turabian).
We look forward to receiving your submission and we anticipate publishing an
excellent journal this spring. If you have any questions about submission guidelines,
or if you would like to receive a copy of The Thetean, please contact
Drew Mecham at: drew.mecham@gmail.com.
Sincerely,
Drew Mecham

We are currently recruiting members to be on the 2009 Thetean editorial staff. The Thetean, published annually, is our department historical journal which contains student papers written during the previous year. This winter we are looking for about ten to twelve students, both graduate and undergraduate, to prepare the Thetean for publication in May. All history students who would like editing experience, who would like to gain practical experience to prepare for graduate school and added perspective on improving their own papers, who would like to learn about the dynamics of publishing a journal, or who would like a fun class that is different from traditional lecture-based courses, are invited to apply. (Being on an editorial staff also looks great on a resume!) It is preferable if you have taken or are currently taking History 485 or 490, but it is not absolutely necessary. Click here for the staff application. Participation as a member of the staff is worth four credits for winter semester. Staff members will solicit student papers, select between seven and ten of them for publication, and then prepare them for production. We are also looking for assistant editors, one for each of the production and acquisitions staff.
If you have any experience with In-Design or other layout programs, and would be interested in a position as the production editor, please indicate this on your application. For the acquisitions editor, we are looking for an experienced student who can possibly remain on the staff as the editor-in-chief the following year. If you are interested in this position, please fill out the separate application.
Students who are accepted for the staff for Winter Semester 2009 will be notified as soon as possible about how to register. We will probably meet once a week for one hour at a time to be determined by the new staff. If you are interested in applying, please download, print and fill out the application available on the Phi Alpha Theta web page. Along with your application, please include a curriculum vitae (your academic resume), a 1-paragraph statement of intent (why you would like to be on The Thetean staff), and a writing sample. Please leave your stapled application packet in my box in the history department office (2130 JFSB) by Friday, November 14.
This year we will be working under the mentorship of Dr. Jay Buckley. Putting together The Thetean last year was a great experience, and we are looking forward to publishing an even better volume this spring. Dr. Buckley and I hope that you will consider joining the staff, and we look forward to reviewing your applications. Please feel free to e-mail your questions to me at drew.mecham@gmail.com.
Sincerely,
Drew Mecham

P. S. If you are an editing minor, you can receive credit towards your minor by being on the staff. E-mail me for details. Also, being on the editorial staff will not preclude you from submitting your own papers as entries.
