"The International Origins of Dwight D. Eisenhower's Political Economy": My Publications This articleis related toSovereign Soldiers. It also illuminates the connection between the military at mid-century and American political economy. However, unlike the book, the article focuses narrowly on Dwight D. Eisenhower. Most of the biographical work on Eisenhower explains his presidential policy choices by appealing to his childhood, or a military "ethos" he absorbed, or his basic temperament. My article shows that his views on political economy evolved during the Great Depression and then after World War II as he learned more. In the end, his particular brand of politics came from the lessons he self-consciously tried to learn as he hesitently fell into the presidency.
