Research and Teaching Support

Each year the History Department has some limited funds from the Annual Gift Fund available for course enhancement or research enhancement expenses.

Course Enhancement

Course enhancement funds are intended to assist faculty in enriching the content of their courses and providing students with unique opportunities. Grants may be used for transportation for field trips, admissions, tickets to performances, course materials, honoraria for guest lecturers, meals (must be approved by the dean), etc. If the course is a General Education requirement, department funds will be used to match GE course enhancement funds, which should be applied for directly through the GE office. Because of the very limited amount of funds available, preference will be given to faculty with a strong teaching record and commitment to mentoring students, and those who have sought college matching funds.

Research Enhancement

Research enhancement funds may be requested to offset some of the costs to obtain images for a publication, pay a professional indexer, travel to an archive or library, present a guest lecture, attend a special conference or exhibition, etc. These funds are intended to supplement, not replace, existing department, college, university, and outside funds for research and conference travel. Research enhancement funds are not to be used to pay for research or teaching assistants: these should be paid for out of existing department student wage funds. Research enhancement funds are not normally intended for equipment purchases either: these should be requested from the college or university. Because of the very limited amount of funds available, preference will be given to faculty with research projects that are at an advanced stage and likely to produce publications, and to faculty who have sought college matching funds.
